British fight favourite Lenny Daws is targeting an incredible joint-double with football heroes Sutton United to win the European title and FA Cup.
Daws, was a guest of the club at Gander Green Lane yesterday to watch their amazing FA Cup 4th Round win to knock Championship side Leeds out of the competition with a 1-0 win.
Sensing a huge upset, the Carshalton fighter was so confident of a Sutton victory that he boldly predicted the correct score line in a live interview on radio station TalkSport just before the match.
He celebrated wildly with the fans’ as the whistle blew to end the match and record the non-league club’s greatest ever triumph, that surpasses their last FA Cup giant-killing in 1989 over then top-flight Coventry in the third round.
It was a big inspiration for Daws ahead of his European title challenge on Saturday 11th February at the Carshalton Leisure Centre when he takes on the dangerous and undefeated Swede Anthony Yigit.
This will be Daws’ third shot at the prestigious blue belt and like Sutton he aims to make it a memorable victory on home turf.
“That was an unbelievable win on Sunday and I’m so happy for the players’, the manager and the club and now in years to come I can say ‘I was there’,” Said Daws.
“When you get the big clubs coming down to play against the non-league team everyone assumes it’s going to be a roll over for them, but this is one of the magical FA cup stories of the underdogs biting back,”
“It’s a fantastic success story from our area and shows that you don’t need millions of pound to succeed, you need heart, desire and plenty of hard work and the Sutton team have that in abundance,”
“Now that Sutton have got through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, I’m predicting that they can go all the way and win it. People will say I’m crazy, but who would have thought Leicester would have ever won the Premiership,”
“I’ve got my European title fight in just a couple of weeks’ time and I’m inviting everyone at the club down to watch my fight and give me their support to win that title, it would mean the world to me.”
The European Lightweight Championship between Daws v Yigit headlines an action-packed card that also features Morden super-lightweight Craig Whyatt, Irish Welterweight Champion Peter McDonagh, unbeaten Wraysbury super-welterweight prospect Tony Bange, plus many more.
