Super-lightweight ace Lenny Daws will get a shot at the Vacant EBU title against Anthony Yigit after the Champion Ruben Nieto relinquished the belt.
The EBU today announced that with Spaniard Nieto vacating his title, a purse-bid has been called for Wednesday 28th September in Rome that will decide where and when the eagerly awaited contest will take place.
Unfortunately for Daws, a former two-time British Champion, he won’t be able to get justice against Nieto, who he was controversially disqualified against last December in a European title challenge.
Daws was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards going into the tenth round, despite being floored in the third round, but an accidental clash of heads opened a bad cut above Nieto’s eye and he was unable to continue. The referee Freddy Rafn ruled that it was an intentional headbutt and Daws was unjustly disqualified.
Know as “Lightning”, Daws also lost in his first challenge for the belt in October 2012 when he travelled to Italy to take on Michele Di Rocco for the Vacant title and despite a very close fight the decision went to the local favourite.
In Yigit, Daws will have to use all of his 16 years and 34 fight experience against the young and hungry challenger from Sweden who is yet to taste defeat in 18 fights.
However, the Morden star is thrilled that he will get another shot at the prized European crown and is confident he will finally land the title on his third attempt.
“It’s fantastic that I’m going straight in for a European title shot again, but I’m disappointed that it won’t be Nieto in front of me on the night as I wanted to prove fair and square that I had him beat last time,” Said Daws.
“Everyone could see I was beating him and on course to win, the judges had me ahead so why would I need to headbutt him? The referee got it completely wrong, but now it’s my golden opportunity,”
“I’ve seen Yigit, he’s still up-and-coming and hasn’t got the experience that I have and that will be a key factor in this fight. I can’t wait for it, I firmly believe that it’s going to be third time lucky for me this time and I’ll be finally crowed Champion of Europe.”
